Prolonged Exposure Therapy for Posttraumatic Stress DisorderPE is the most extensively studied psychotherapy for PTSD. Numerous well-controlled studies have shown that PTSD is highly effective in reducing symptoms of PTSD, depression, anger, and anxiety in trauma survivors.
PE has been successfully used to treat individuals with PTSD resulting from a variety of traumas including rape, violent physical assault, childhood sexual abuse, terrorist attacks, combat, motor vehicle accidents, and natural disasters. PE was developed by Edna Foa, Ph.D. at University of Pennsylvania's Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety (CTSA). Practitioners throughout the United States and many foreign countries use PE successfully. It has been shown to be beneficial for those suffering from co-occurring PTSD and substance dependence when combined with substance abuse treatment. PE is effective with individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder who successfully completed Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Over decades of testing and development, PE has evolved into an adaptable program of intervention. In addition to reducing symptoms of PTSD and related difficulties, PE instills confidence and a sense of mastery, improves aspects of daily functioning, increases clients' ability to cope with courage rather than fearfulness when facing stress, and improves their ability to discriminate safe and unsafe situations.
The Department of Veterans Affairs has rolled out PE nationwide in their treatment centers, and the Department of Defense is currently investigating rolling out PE for treating active duty military suffering from PTSD.
