Certification as PE Therapist
After participating in a Certified 4-Day Intensive Workshop in Prolonged Exposure Therapy, therapists have the opportunity to become a "Certified PE Therapist" by participating in supervision/consultation on two full PE cases.
Tracey Lichner has certified numerous clinicians as "PE Therapists", nationally and internationally, in her role as Director of Supervision and Dissemination at University of Pennsylvania's Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety (CTSA). She worked closely for over eight years with the developer of PE, Dr. Edna Foa. Tracey has certified PE Therapists in private practice, veterans' affairs, community behavioral health, active duty military, and DBT clinics.
Certification supervision includes pre-PE consultation, videotaped therapy session review, and weekly one-on-one supervision between PE sessions.

Preparatory Consultations
Up to three, 30-minute pre-PE consultations per client to assess symptoms, determine appropriateness and timing of PE for client, discuss comorbidities, and prepare client and therapist for PE Session One.
Video Recorded Session Review
Expert review of PE sessions, on average 30 minutes per session (20-50 minutes depending on session number). Session review enables moment-to-moment feedback regarding therapist-client interactions, evaluation of effective emotional engagement of client during imaginal exposure, belief shifts during processing, and troubleshooting obstacles to success. Clients who pose challenges may require more in-depth review.
Therapist sends the recording immediately after session, to enable timely review before next consultation and PE session. Videos can be uploaded to secure electronic sharing websites or DVDs can be sent via overnight mail.
Weekly Consultation
Supervision for 45 minutes in between PE sessions. Therapists receive individualized feedback from previous session's video review, answers to clinical questions, and step-by-step preparation for next session. Difficult cases may sometimes require longer consultation sessions.
The 2 full cases ideally should be completed in a linear fashion, (i.e., completing the first case before starting the second) to maximize the learning experience. Successful completion of 2 cases consists of at least 7 sessions with the same client, in which the session protocols are followed, even if a client terminates treatment prematurely. It is preferable, however, to have two cases in which therapy is mutually terminated and a final session is conducted.
